Georgia DUI License Suspension Work Permit

As you may already know, being arrested for driving under the influence (DUI) in Lawrenceville will result in an automatic license suspension. While you can appeal this sentence by requesting an administrative DMV hearing, your driving privileges remain at risk—even if all goes well at this proceeding. Yes, you read that correctly: your DUI case does not end with your administrative hearing. There’s still the matter of your criminal hearing, and regardless of the outcome of your appeal, your license will likely be suspended if you are found guilty of DUI in criminal court. As a result, you may be unable to get to and from work without a Georgia DUI license suspension work permit.

If you think losing your driver’s license is tough, consider this: if you are found guilty in criminal court, you face a minimum $300 fine, up to 40 hours in jail, and the prospect of spending at least 24 hours behind bars. And to top it all off, you could still lose your driving privileges for a year or longer.

Although you may be unable to avoid a lot of these penalties if you are convicted of DUI, you may still be able to retain some of your driving privileges. If you are eligible, the court may issue a restricted driver’s license—also known as a DUI license suspension work permit—so you can drive to work, school, medical appointments, and other activities approved by the court.

Of course, not everyone is eligible for a restricted license. Under Georgia state law, you must be 21 or older and have no prior drunk driving convictions on your record to be granted a license suspension work permit.

Fortunately, a skilled DUI defense attorney can help you avoid losing your driver’s license and many of the other penalties that often follow a DUI conviction—and no one can do that better than attorneys Lee Webb and Greg Willis.
